SUMMARY:Using the Command Line\, Part 2: Shell Scripting for Research Workflows
DESCRIPTION:This workshop builds on command line fundamentals by showing researchers how to turn repeated terminal tasks into reusable shell scripts that save time\, reduce errors\, and support reproducible research. The session will introduce the structure of a simple shell script\, working with variables and command-line arguments\, and using basic control flow such as loops and conditionals to handle repeated tasks. Participants will see how these ideas can be applied to common needs such as renaming files\, processing batches of data\, or chaining together command-line tools. The session will also briefly highlight how AI tools can support terminal-based work by helping drafting scripts\, explain unfamiliar commands\, or troubleshoot errors\, while also emphasizing careful review\, verification\, and researcher oversight. By the end\, participants will be better equipped to automate routine work and extend the command line into a more powerful productivity tool.

SUMMARY:High Performance Python Data Arrays for Analytics
DESCRIPTION:While Python has been the most popular programming language since 2019\, data scientists often critique its slow speed and limited capabilities in handling big data scenarios. In this workshop series\, we’ll tackle how to enhance Python’s performance in data science by diving deep into its workings and leveraging technologies to transform Python into an effective tool for high-performance big data analytics. \nIn the second 2-hour session\, our focus will be on techniques for loading and processing extremely large datasets in Python on a single machine\, comparing data array implementations from Numpy\, Pandas\, Polars\, Modin\, Dask\, and Vaex\, among others. No specific prerequisites are required to join the lecture\, but familiarity with Python’s dataframe packages will aid in fully grasping the discussed content.

SUMMARY:Using Messaging for Custom Research Mobile Apps
DESCRIPTION:This 1-hour\, non-technical workshop will introduce researchers to UCLA Messaging\, a campus service that can send study-related notifications directly to participants through custom mobile apps. Using the NIH-funded UCLA Oralytics oral health app as an example\, we’ll show how messages like reminders\, tips\, and “just-in-time” behavioral nudges can help participants stay engaged between visits and better follow study protocols. We’ll focus on concepts rather than code—how messaging can support your study goals\, the types of messages you might send\, and how OARC can partner with your team to design and implement messaging in your own research apps.

SUMMARY:Multiple Imputation in Stata
DESCRIPTION:This workshop provides an introduction to handling missing data in statistical analyses via multiple imputation in Stata. We begin with a discussion of missing data mechanisms and how model results might be affected if we use complete case analysis. We then discuss how multiple imputation reduces bias and produces more accurate estimates of uncertainty. Along the way\, we provide practical advice for conducting multiple imputation in Stata\, emphasizing the importance of understanding assumptions\, selecting appropriate models\, and carefully evaluating the imputed results.
